Well it’s been a great holiday season so far – lots of fun with family and friends, and some great photo and video opportunities of Kylah. Here are two quick ones (we got a lot of mileage out of that outfit this year!):
Kylah visits Noonie for Christmas sushi (that story to follow)

Josh here – I am now up at MBC for the Muskoka Woods full-time staff retreat, and thought I’d post the update about how Kylah’s MRI went.
Laura had woken up earlier to feed Kylah one last time – sometime around 3am – and we woke up for good at just after 5am so we could get prepared and leave early to beat the traffic down to Sick Kids for our 7am appointment. It was clear-sailing and we arrived before 7 and had time to get a bagel from Tim Horton’s.
We made it to the check-in on time and had to change Kylah into one of those hospital robes. She was so cute in it:
We waited there for over an hour before a nurse named Michelle came and brought us into the MRI area where she did an assessment of Kylah to see if she could safely sedate her using the drugs that were necessary. Turns out everything was fine, so she had to give Kylah her first IV… this was an interesting experience for Laura and I — I’m not sure either of us have fully processed how we felt about it. On one hand it was a completely devastating event that I couldn’t believe I was taking part in subjecting my daughter to, on the other hand I knew it was for a reason and it was only a short discomfort that she would soon forget. Then on the other third hand if you had a third hand, it was a hilarious experience!!! Hilarious you ask?? Well yes, and I’ll explain why…
Michelle the nurse explained the drugs they were going to give to Kylah and what would happen. There were two drugs that were going to be administered. The first one was to make her relax – Michelle explained this would happen immediately after it had been administered and she would appear dopey. The second drug was to sedate her. The PLANNED steps were as follows:
1. Roll Kylah and her left arm in a blanket very tightly so she is restrained
2. Michelle gives Kylah the IV in her right arm
3. Michelle administers drug #1 (for relaxing)
4. Michelle administers drug #2 (sedation)
5. Kylah falls asleep and is taken to MRI
And here’s how the steps ACTUALLY went:
1. Roll Kylah and her left arm in a blanket very tightly so she is restrained
2. Kylah wails and screams
3. Michelle gives Kylah the IV in her right arm
4. Kylah wails and screams directly at Michelle
5. Michelle administers drug #1 (for relaxing)
6. Kylah immediately stops crying and looks at Michelle.
7. Kylah starts to giggle.
8. Michelle administers drug #2 (sedation)
9. Laura almost faints from seeing the IV and has to sit down and have a nurse bring her grapejuice
10. Kylah stops giggling and falls asleep and is taken to MRI
Funny, see? I told you! Here is Kylah smiling at Michelle (you can see her giggle behind her soother… she was so dopey), Kylah falling asleep (note part way through the video when Laura is about to faint and asks me to hold Kylah so she can go sit down), and Laura recovering from seeing the IV with her grape juice.
Anyway, the MRI lasted for one hour (which is why Kylah had to be sedated). They said one of us could go into the MRI but advised against it since all you could do was sit in the corner where you couldn’t even see Kylah at all, and apparently the noise in the MRI is jackhammer-loud. So that would have been an interesting hour. Instead we grabbed an Americano from Starbucks and sat in the hospital main floor – is it ever beautiful! There was also a bake sale on the 6th floor that we checked out. Anyway, before we knew it the hour was up and we returned to find Kylah awake and hungry. She recovered so well and we were allowed to go right away after Laura fed her. The nurse said Kylah was SO CUTE (I think we all agree!).
So, top questions from today:
1. How did it go?… Answer: it went as good as it could have.
2. Is Kylah okay? … Answer: Kylah is GREAT. We are so proud of her.
3. When do you find out the results?… Answer: if something needs attention immediately we will be contacted, otherwise we will find out end of January when Kylah sees the dermatologist again. No news is good news.
Thank you all for your thoughts and prayers. They mean so much to us.
Oh and yes, Laura is okay too! She enjoyed her grape juice.
